While working as an expert for a National Geographic tour in Iceland, I heard a hubbub outside my window. I rushed outside to discover the northern lights dancing overhead. As my tour group gathered, greens shifted to yellows with the occasional splash of red—a perfect opportunity to discuss the science behind the glow and cause for such varied colors.
Searching for these moments ripe for impromptu lectures is one of my favorite parts of traveling as an expert with both National Geographic Expeditions and Smithsonian Journeys. These experiences force me to think on my feet, drawing from my nearly eight years as a science reporter and PhD in Earth Science.
For years I traveled the world as a scientist and then science writer. I've scooped up water flowing atop glaciers in Antarctica, stood on the rim of a smoldering volcano in the Canary Islands, and ventured 1,000 feet below the surface through Cheve cave in Mexico. Now I'm bringing these spectacular stories of science and adventure to travelers as an expert on tours through stunning locations around the world.
